Animation: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Link to cartoon on Mother Jones
In this week's editorial animation on Mother Jones, Charles Koch is the magic man in the mirror, exhorting a poor schnook to protect the rights of his future billionaire self by voting against raising taxes on millionaires and billionaires. As Koch says, "Your present self may suffer, but your future self will thank you for your forethought!"

Written, animated and acted by me. Sound effects from www.freesound.org

  2. Indeed. The right wing is playing on an American myth to support the interests of the rich -- to the detriment of the very people supporting it. It's mind boggling to hear regular people yelping about protecting tax breaks for the super rich. But even more mind boggling is that they are VOTING to support those breaks for the rich.

  3. One of things that is really upsetting to the .01%ers, is that the message from the people involved in Occupy Wall Street, etc. is examining the policies. Governing never seems to be covered much by the media, and really, the institutions, organizations, that create political and economic policies that favor income inequality are what the spotlight needs to be shined upon.

Electoral politics is secondary, and the uberrich are more than happy to see the media focus on that. But when certain rocks are overturned, certain silk undies get stained pretty rapidly.

  4. It doesn't make any sense...What is going through their minds...So many are educated people...Is it that they think they might actually become part of the rich someday???

  5. Zina,
hi - love "the mirror on the wall." I was hoping to imbed it on my blog, but MJ doesn't seem to support this. Any thoughts about allowing this in the future?

  6. Thanks, Kelly; I upload all the animations to YouTube, usually on Thursdays or Fridays, after they've been on Mother Jones for a couple of days:

John, you make a really good point: I agree that strict regulations should be enacted to protect ourselves from the kind of rapaciousness that the right wing is promoting and protecting.

Judy, unfortunately I think that the people who vote against their own best interests must be doing it out of some crazy sense of identification with people who quite happily sell them down the river.
